Preparing for Surgery

  • You will receive a call from Dr Mayne’s assistant the week of the surgery on what time to arrive at North York General Hospital Day Surgery Check-in Desk (1st Floor across from the Tim Hortons)

  • Cryotherapy Cuff Rental (ie. Game Ready). Dr Mayne will provide you with an information pamphlet at your consultation date.  A member of Dr Mayne’s team will contact you closer to the surgery date to help arrange the rental  

  • You will be instructed by Dr Mayne’s assistant when to stop eating/drinking before your surgery 

  • If you require a Pre-Operative Anesthestic consultation, Dr Mayne’s assistant will instruct you about the date/time  

  • Medications: continue to take your regular medications up to the day before surgery.  If you take blood thinners - you will receive specific instructions from the Pre-Op Anesthetic clinic on when to stop the blood thinner

  • You will require a friend/family member to drive you home after surgery

Day of Surgery

  • You will arrive at North York General Hospital 2 hours prior to your surgery

  • Check-in at the Day Surgery desk (1st Floor Beside Tim Horton’s)

  • A clerk will assist you with the check-in process

  • You will change out of your clothes in a hospital gown/clothes (Provided by NYGH)

  • Your belongings will be secured in a locker during your surgery

    Nerve Block

  • Most patients will receive a “nerve block” before the surgery.  This is performed by the Anesthetist in the “block room” to assist with pain management during and after the surgery  

  • You will be escorted by Team Attendant to the block room 

  • You will be called to the “block room” before your surgery begins

  • After the nerve block is performed the Anesthetist will bring you to the Operating Room for the surgery

Surgery

  • Once you arrive in the Operating Room, Dr Mayne and his team will confirm your identification

  • A Surgical Timeout will be performed confirming the correct side/site and surgical procedure

  • The team will help transfer you onto the operating table and hook up monitors (ie. heart tracing stickers, oxygen monitors, blood pressure cuff)

  • The Anesthetist will administer sedation and general anesthesia 

  • Once you are asleep/sedated Dr Mayne and his team will prepare the surgical site site (ie. clean with alcohol solution)

  • Surgery will be performed 

After Surgery

  • Once surgery is completed you will be transferred to the Recovery Room (ie. PACU)

  • If you are being admitted to the hospital after surgery (i.e. Dr Mayne will discuss this with you prior to surgery) you will be transferred to the In-Patient Floor (4 West). Your friend/family member will be able to see you at this point

  • If you are being discharged  home after your surgery (i.e. Day Surgery) you will then be transferred to the Day Surgery unit.  Your friend/family member will be able to see you at this point

  • Dr Mayne will see you in the Day Surgery/In-Patient Unit after your surgery to inform you how the surgery went, review Post-operative instructions (insert link to page), Pain Management Instructions (insert link to page)

Post Operative Recovery

  • In most cases you will need someone to drive you home, and may need a friend or family member to stay with you to assist you in the first days following your surgery. Dr Mayne will discuss this with you before you are discharged from the hospital

  • It is important to manage your pain with the medications that Dr Mayne has provided

  • Please read through the Post-Op pain management instructions sheet that Dr Mayne has provided

  • Please apply the cryotherapy cuff to the operative site/body part starting on the night of surgery.  Do not utilize the compression setting until 48 hours after the surgery.  You can sleep with the cryotherapy cuff on

  • Please return to your normal diet once your able to starting eating.  It is important to eat a well-balanced and clean diet (ie. minimize processed/high sugar) foods after surgery

  • You should not drink alcohol and take the narcotic (ie. Hydromorphone/Dilaudid) medications together

  • If you regularly consume marijuana products , do not use the narcotic (ie. Hydromorphone/Dilaudid) medications as well

  • If you are a smoker -  try to cut down or quit smoking.  Smoking significantly effects wound/tendon/bone healing after surgery

  • If you are diabetic - please ensure you have close monitoring of your blood sugars after surgery

Post-Operative Visit

  • Dr Mayne will see you at either Revolution Orthopaedic Clinic or North York General Hospital Orthopaedic clinic approximately 2-3 weeks after your surgery  

  • This will be clearly stated in the Post-Operative Instruction sheet that Dr Mayne provides to you

  • You will be provided with a Follow-Up Appointment DATE.  You will be called with an appointment TIME

Rehabilitation & Physiotherapy

  • Dr Mayne will provide you with a specific physiotherapy protocol based on the surgery that was completed

  • You will be instructed when to start your physiotherapy after surgery.
